Tim Samaras, Renowned Tornado Researcher and Storm Chaser
Samaras, his son, Tim, and fellow storm chaser Carl Young perished in a tornado that devastated parts of Oklahoma in May 2013.
Tim Samaras, a tornado researcher who contributed to the Discovery program Storm Chasers and provided dramatic extreme-weather videos for other TV productions, died along with two colleagues — one of who was his son, Paul — died May 31, 2013, while covering a powerful tornado near El Reno, Oklahoma. He was 54.
According to news reports, the three men were the first casualties among scientific researchers while chasing tornadoes, a citation attributed to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
In a statement, the Storm Prediction Center said, "Samaras was a respected tornado researcher and friend ... who brought to the field a unique portfolio of expertise in engineering, science, writing and videography,"
