Release: Univision's "Educate, Es El Momento" Wins Los Angeles Area Emmys Governors Award
The esteemed honor recognizes Univision's outstanding achievement.
NOHO ARTS DISTRICT, CA, June 20, 2013 - Univision's comprehensive, multi-platform, education initiative, "Educate, Es El Momento" (Educate Yourself, The Moment is Now), has been selected as this year's Governors Award recipient for the 65th Los Angeles Area Emmy® Awards. The announcement was made today by Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum.
The Los Angeles Area Emmys Governors Award is the most esteemed honor given to an individual, company or organization for outstanding achievement in the arts, sciences, or management of television, consistently over a period of years, or in recognition of an outstanding singular achievement or contribution. The award will be presented at the 65th Los Angeles Area Emmys ceremony on Saturday, August 3rd at the Television Academy's Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre.
"Univision's 'Educate, Es El Momento' has helped the City of Los Angeles and the LAUSD produce real change in local and continuing public education," said Television Academy Chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum in making the announcement. "With such a vast array of education centers and information provided by this program, children and adults of Los Angeles were able to seek out the help and material they need to succeed regardless of education level or economic status. Univision and this outstanding public outreach program are very deserving recipients of this year's Governors Award."
The year-long campaign effort to improve academic achievement among K-12 Hispanic students engaged and informed parents in that community on the importance of education, with a focus on college readiness, high school and college completion. Univision's synergistic approach to this campaign included joint efforts from all broadcast, radio and promotional properties. Not only did Univision host their fourth annual free "Feria de Educacion" (Education Fair) featuring a career pathway, mentor area and education experts on-site, but the network also aired more than thirty news stories on the importance of education, and provided "A Su Lados" (At Your Side), a phone bank hosted during newscast hours where viewers could call to speak directly with education experts on a variety of topics.
The one-day "Feria" event is the only citywide, Spanish-language education fair in Los Angeles with more than 200 participating non-profit organizations. The event included 200 volunteers comprised of Univision employees, students and non-profits as well as special appearances and participation of 25 Univision broadcast personalities to share their own stories and path to success.
Univision has received praise for "Educate, Es El Momento" from some of the largest influential programs and non-profit organizations in Los Angeles including former Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio R. Villaraigosa, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, California State University Dominguez Hills, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, Parent Institute for Quality Education and many more.
The Governors Award has been bestowed upon many individuals, companies and organizations that have made a positive impact in the Los Angeles community.
